Whats Wrong With Fish Farms - Animal Rights

There are plenty of things wrong with fish farming, but lets start with the fact that we now know without a doubt that fish are sentient beings. That alone makes fish farming a bad idea. In an article published on May 15, 2016, in the New York Times, author of What a Fish Knows  Jonathon Balcome  writes about the intelligence and sentience of fish. From an animal rights standpoint, thats a pretty good reason to criticize fish farms. Setting aside for the moment that fish farms are inherently wrong because they kill fish, lets look at what the industry is really about. While some believe that fish farming is the solution to overfishing, they do not take into account the inherent inefficiency of animal agriculture. Just as it takes 12 pounds of grain to produce a pound of beef, it takes 70 wild-caught feeder fish to produce one salmon on a fish farm. Time magazine reports that it takes 4.5 kg of ocean-caught fish to produce 1 kg of fishmeal that is fed to a fish on a fish farm. Floating Pig Farms Regarding fish farms, Daniel Pauly, professor of fisheries at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver states, Theyre like floating pig farms . . . They consume a tremendous amount of highly concentrated protein pellets and they make a terrific mess. Rosamond L. Naylor, an agricultural economist at Stanfords Center for Environmental Science and Policy explains about aquaculture, â€Å"We are not taking strain off wild fisheries. We are adding to it.† Vegetarian Fish Some people are catching on, and recommending that consumers choose farmed fish who are mostly vegetarian, to avoid the inefficiency of feeding wild-caught fish to farmed fish. Scientists are even trying to develop (mostly) vegetarian food pellets to feed to carnivorous fish on fish farms. However, eating vegetarian farmed fish looks environmentally acceptable only when compared to eating carnivorous farmed fish. There is still the inherent inefficiency of feeding soy, corn or other plant foods to animals, instead of using that plant protein to feed people directly. There is still the matter of fish having feelings, emotions and intelligence once thought to be only the province of land animals. Some experts posit that fish feel pain and if thats true, vegetarian fish are just as capable of feeling pain as carnivorous fish. Waste, Disease, and GMOs In June 2016, an episode on The Dr. Oz Show dealt with genetically modified salmon. Although the FDA approves it, Dr. Oz and his experts believe there is reason for concern. Many retailers are refusing to sell genetically modified farmed salmon, Oz said. Regardless of whether the farmed fish are eating fish or grain, there is still a variety of environmental problems because the fish are raised in confinement systems that allow waste and water to flow in and out with the oceans and rivers in which they are located. While fish farms cause many of the same problems as factory farms on land – waste, pesticides, antibiotics, parasites, and disease – the issues are magnified because of the immediate contamination of the surrounding ocean water. There is also the problem of farmed fish escaping into the wild when nets fail. Some of these farmed fish are genetically modified, which forces us to ask what happens when they escape and either compete with or interbreed with wild populations. Eating land animals also causes problems for marine life. Vast amounts of wild-caught fish are being fed to livestock on land, mostly pigs and chickens, in order to produce meat and eggs for human consumption. Runoff and waste from factory farms kill fish and other marine life and contaminate our drinking water. Because fish are sentient, they have a right to be free from human use and exploitation. From an environmental standpoint, the best way to protect fish, marine ecosystems and all ecosystems is to go vegan.

South Korea s 1998 Sunshine Policy - 1785 Words

South Korea’s 1998 â€Å"Sunshine Policy† was intended to alleviate historical strain and improve political communication with North Korea. By encouraging collaboration and providing economic support, South Korean President Kim Dae Jung hoped to rebuild broken connections with North Korea with the end goal of peaceful co-existence. In response to this new foreign policy and prospect of reunification, many South Korean directors took matters into their own hands and started to experiment with films that featured both North and South Korean characters. Two such directors were Kang Je-gyu and Park Chan-wook, who both used military films to express their opinions on joint North and South Korea relations. Since the two countries have historically been separate, the interesting challenge that Directors Je-gyu and Chan-wook had to face was how to incorporate both parties using filmic aspects of misà ©-en-scene. For example, should both characters appear in the same shots and frames? Should the South Korean characters get more screen time than their North Korean counterparts? In order to address this challenge, the directors had to consider the three manifestations of space: liminality, interstitiality, and marginality. In his Betwixt and Between: The Liminal Period in Rites de Passage, Victor Turner, the father of interpretive anthropology, loosely defines these terms in the context of two separate communities. A ‘liminal individual’ does not occupy a space in either community, anShow MoreRelatedTension on the Korean Peninsula – South Korean Policy Towards North Korea3457 Words   |  14 Pages North Korea, formally known as the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a relic of the Cold War and the world’s last remaining totalitarian Stalinist dictatorship. Fundamentals of Macroeconomics Paper Free Essays

Jerry L. Robinson ECO/372 JUNE 07, 2012 CHAD McDermott Fundamentals of Macroeconomics Paper Gross domestic product: is the value of all goods and services produced in a country in any given year or specific time period. This is measured in dollar amounts and basically the higher the GDP, the better the economy is for that country. We will write a custom essay sample on Fundamentals of Macroeconomics Paper or any similar topic only for you Order Now Real gross domestic product: is nominal Gross domestic product that has been adjusted for inflation. This means that the quantity of goods and services must have the converted values for the prices to be made at the market price. The market price also sets the importance of how things will be purchased on the market. Nominal gross domestic product: is Gross domestic product that is calculated at existing prices. That means that the GDP is affected when the economy does when the output is measured for inflation. This is when prices for goods and services are either going to be higher or lower because of inflation. Unemployment rate: is the total percentage of workforce, who is unemployed and looking for a paid job. When the unemployment rate is up then there are less jobs out there for the people that are looking for employment. This in turn affects the businesses that had to lay off the workers due to low productivity; this also has an effect on the government because unemployment benefits aren’t taxable. Inflation rate: is the rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services are rising over a period of time. Inflation rate can also affect how families operate on a daily basis, inflation rate goes up, prices go up and the spending goes down. People don’t shop as much when the inflation rate has gone up, because the value of the dollar doesn’t go as far when the inflation rate has risen. Interest rate: The interest rate is the amount that a person pays back over and above the principle that has been borrowed from a lending institution. Most banks will lend you money at a low interest rate for a number of different things, it can be a low interest rate for a home, a car, or even to start your own business. Low interest rates, also affects the companies that build the factories that produce the jobs for us. The purchasing of groceries is an important economic activity that affects our government in many different ways. Because when our families go to the grocery store to make the groceries that feeds our families, we give the grocery store cashier our cash and they give us a receipt and our groceries, this is just one of the economic activities that are very important to our economy. This activity effects our government because this is a transaction that is taxed and whenever there is a transaction made that is taxed, this effects the government. The government is the regulators or approving authority of what is taxed and where the tax money goes. Massive layoff of employees is another one of our economic activities that’s very important to our economy as well, these particular activities can and does affect a variety of economic grow in our country and around the world. When the massive layoffs begin, this does a number of things really fast, if you have no job, you have no income to do the grocery shopping for your family. If you can’t do the grocery shopping for your family, then the government doesn’t get the taxes from the purchasing of your groceries. If the government does get the taxes from the purchasing of your groceries, that means the stores aren’t making the money that they would usually make due to the massive layoff of employees. Also the factories that gave the massive layoffs will give employee the pink slip so that they can file for unemployment, when they apply for the unemployment benefits, they government will not get the taxes from the unemployment benefits because this isn’t taxable. So basically, massive layoffs not only affect the worker, but it also affects the government and the factory owner and shareholders as well. Decrease in taxes is a very important economic activity that affects many different areas of our lives, how we live, and how our families operate on a day to day basis. We pay taxes on just about everything, so when a decrease in taxes occurs, this lets us know that when the taxes goes down, a deflation in our economy happens and we tend to spend more money because we know that as long as there is a decrease in taxes we have a little more money to purchase things. This affects the businesses as well, because if the taxes are low they can spend more money on the things that they use to run the factories our buy more ink that produces the paper from the paper factory. This activity affects the government as well, because if the taxes go down there is less money that the government receives from the different factories and or businesses that pays these taxes. This will also trigger a change in our economy in some different form or fashion. If taxes are going down, then you can best assure that inflation or the unemployment rate or both will be affected by this particular economic activity. The flow of resources from one entity to another is very important, because this is the flow that makes all of our economic activities so not only in our country but other countries as well. The flow of resources goes a little something like this for all of the economic activities that are listed above. Household is the first flow of this, which is considered consumption, factor market is next on the list of importance, business production is where we go to work to make the products that in return pays the bills and buys the groceries. The goods market again, where we purchase the stuff from the wages that were made from the factories. Then the flow brings you back to the household so we can pay the rent or mortgage that is taxed by the government in order for them to continue to run our economy and hopefully to lower inflation and the unemployment rate. Good Vs Evil Beowulf Essay Example For Students

Good Vs Evil Beowulf Essay Beowulf Both Shild Shaving and Beowulf were highly honored during their lives. Both were brave warriors, victorious in many Battles. Shild conquered many people, and many lands. For example, How Shild made slaves of soldiers from every Land, crowds of captives hed beaten into terror He also became the king of the Danes. He was highly honored, and became very rich in his lifetime. Just as Beowulf had become one of the most famous men during life due to his defeat of Grendel, and Grendels mother. He later also became king of Geatland. He ruled for fifty years, but his time came during a battle against and irate dragon. Beowulf was still very strong in his elderly years. As was Shild Shaving: When his time was come the old king died, still strong but called to the lords hands. Both of there deaths were honored by very large funerals. Shild Shaving was set out to sea on a fighting ship which was brimming with treasures. Beowulf body was burned along with massive amounts of treasure. His funeral pyre was kept kindled for 10 days. Both Shild Shaving and Beowulf were incredibly loved, and respected by their people. Both were very mighty warriors, and capable of tremendous feats. They conquered land and peoples, and they both died very proud deaths. The story Beowulf is focused around the main character, Beowulf. He is a man of awesome, superhuman powers. He is able to battle huge beasts without the aid of weapons. In the story, he sails to Denmark to a meadhall which was named Herot. The story is interesting in that many things are named, especially swords, and armor which are especially honored if they had helped their previous owners in battle. Beowulfs sword was named Hrunting. Herot had been plagued for twelve years by a monster named Grendel. In one night, Beowuld conquers Grendel, and the 12 years of Suffering is over with. Unbeknownst to Beowulf, Grendel has a mother who then seeks revenge for Grendels death. Beowulf then fights an amazing underwater battle against her, and is victorious. He then sales back to his native Geatland, and then becomes king. After about fifty years, a dragon begins to start reeking havoc upon Geatland. Beowulf blames himself for the dragon, and goes to fight it. He dies, but in the process, kills the dragon. Beowulf was written roughly around 800BC. This makes it very interesting because it gives you somewhat of an idea of what life may have been like. In the story, life is centered around meadhalls which are large drinking halls. Here, one can sleep for the night, get a meal, and also drink the sweet alcoholic drink called meade. The meadhall was the center of the village. If you were a stranger, you could try and spend the night there. If you were a warrior, you would sleep there. In Beowulf, the King of Denmark lived in a meadhall named Herot. Another large aspect of life was honor. Honor was dependent upon who your father was. If he had no honor, then neither would you. Lineage was extremely important. For example, when Beowulf and his warriors landed in Denmark, they were approached by a Danish warrior who questioned them about there presence in Denmark. Beowulf told him He was there to fight Grendel, but he also said, We are Geats, men who follow Higlac. My father was a famous soldier, known far and wide as a leader of men. His name was Edgetho An interesting aspect of Beowulfs battle against Grendel was that when he fought Grendel, he used no weapons. .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 , .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .postImageUrl , .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 , .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567:hover , .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567:visited , .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567:active { border:0!important; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567:active , .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567 .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ub457d9ca126a73cb77059ec182bf4567:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Integrity Essay He only used his bare hands. In the story he grabbed Grendel with a rip so hard it crushed his bones. Grendel was able to escape, but his arm was torn off. Because of this, it is thought that Beowulf may have been a Berserker. A berserker was a type of warrior who would go into battle without any weapons, just sheer strength, and they would squeeze their opponents to death. Literally bear-hug them until they died. There is a term called lofgeornost. It means fame after death. This was also a very important thing in the story. It was what many men strove for. It would help to carry on the honor of a family. If someone had a father who had become very famous in his lifetime for heroic deeds, then that mans family would be bound to be respected. It also the same with the weapons in the story. If they had helped there owners in battle, then they would become very valuable, and prized possessions. For example, after Beowulf had conquered Grendel, and was about to dive into the lake after Grendels mother, Unferth gave his noble sword named Hrunting which had been successful in many battles, to Beowulf. My personal view on Beowulf is very positive. It is a wonderful story. Almost like a fairy tale. It is filled with many terrible monsters, and extremely brave warriors. Theres even a dragon in the story. It evokes memories, of my father reading stories to my sister and I before bed every night. Many stories are very similar in form to Beowulf in respect of having a terrible monster, a brave warrior, a happy ending and some moral to the story. Beowulf ending wasnt extremely positive though because of the fact that Beowulf died. He was an old man though, and his time had come. He did though kill the dragon, so it wasnt entirely unhappy. Throughout the story there is the message of how fickle life can be. Beowulf stressed the mutability of life. One minute your up, the other your down. You can never predict what life might throw you, so always be weary. This holds true even today. When the story was written, life was very dangerous. You could easily be killed by the elements, or in battle, or by sickness. Today, one still has to fear illness, and even the elements. For example, there has been a string of hurricanes, and tornadoes, and other natural disasters plaguing the United States. Beowulf message is very clear, and very useful, and should be heeded.
